Recently, I read through Nightsong again, and I was surprised by how many songs and pieces I had included in the novel. I think this comes from a lifetime of singing in choirs and playing the piano, guitar, and ukulele. I’m an enthusiastic amateur and not a particularly talented musician, but all this music participation has given me an appreciation for many types of music. I made a YouTube playlist so that those who have read Nightsong can listen to the music mentioned in the novel. But even if you haven’t read Nightsong, you may enjoy this eclectic selection of music.
Here’s a partial playlist:
Welsh songs and hymns—All through the Night and Suo-Gan
Irish music—the hymn, Be Now My Vision
Spirituals and gospel music—Deep River, Up above My Head, and Go Tell It on the Mountain
Music from movies—Fred Astaire’s Cheek to Cheek, Moon River, and the theme from Out of Africa.
Country and swing—Bob Wills, Johnny Cash, and Hank Williams
Classical—Fur Elise (Beethoven), Hall of the Mountain King (Grieg), and Chopin, played by a young Liberace (yes, he’s mentioned in the novel!).
A song from Colombia—Fonseca’s La Casa
A folk song from Australia—Waltzing Matilda
And because Nightsong is set in Hoboken, New Jersey, of course, one song by Old Blue Eyes.
